STC promoted “See Yourself in Cyber” during Cybersecurity Awareness Month this past October. Local students were invited to visit our Internet of Things Living Lab (IoTLL) and Joint Cyber Range and Training Center (JCRTC) where they experienced first-hand how cybersecurity remains omnipresent in daily life.

While at the IoTLL, Information Systems Security Engineer (ISSE) Ryan Smith provided students with live demonstrations that revealed how easily common household devices can be compromised by malicious attackers and guidance on how to better secure such devices to optimize privacy. At the JCRTC, Senior Industrial Systems Cybersecurity Engineer (Sr. ISCE) Mark Christofferson introduced students to the concept of Operational Technologies (OT). He provided insight on the importance OT plays in our daily lives and delivered a live cyberattack demonstration against a simulated electrical substation.

Overall, students gained a stronger understanding of how cybersecurity in not just in informational technology (IT) or computer science, but in all aspects of our lives from our homes and businesses to industry and infrastructure. Students increased their awareness to better prepare themselves and others for the future, both personally and professionally.

Mission accomplished!
